Trivandrum, 16 September 2011: The draft Telecom policy 2011, is planning for bringing down domestic roaming, as it is looking for 1 country – 1 circle policy. It will eventually offer mobile number portability to users beyond home circle.
The policy is scheduled by the year-end, also proposes to expand mobile number portability and allow consumers to retain their numbers when they move to a new city or any location in the country without having to pay roaming charges.
Presently MNP, the facility that allows customers to retain their mobile number while switching operators, is restricted to a circle.
There is a chance for the opposition of operators because they are getting around 10% revenue from it. But TRAI is courage enough to implement it. The new policy will create a better telecom industry with less fragmentation.
For subscribers, it would be a win-win situation as no roaming charge and most flexible MNP system waiting for them.
