Trivandrum: A major fire broke out at Chalai market on Friday evening completely damaging more than 10 shops. The fire was first noticed from the godown Lovely Fancy Stores situated at Nizar Hotel lane around 5.30 p.m. This was soon spread to other shops situated nearby. Shops destroyed by the fire includes Lovely Fancy stores, New Bilal Store and Pack n’ Pack, Abdulla Traders, Noble Footwear, Shabu Agency etc. The fire was suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit, authorities said.
Around 20 fire tenders from the State Fire and Rescue Services including the Rosenbauer-Panther - of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) was used to control the fire.
Shahul Hameed, 64, from Manacaud, owner of a shop at Chalai died resulting in health issues from the fire.
The fire was taken under control late in the night. However damage in the fire is yet to be assessed.
