Trivandrum Zoo, timings, contact phone number, tickets

Open 1000 -1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays
The Trivandrum Zoo is one of the first zoos in India. It is located in a well-planned botanical garden with an area of 55 acres at the centre of the city. The Zoo was established in 1857 by the Maharaja of Travancore.

Animals available in the zoo include lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, royal Bengal tiger, and leopard, Asian elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, and Cape buffalos etc.

A reptile house with different species of snakes is also located in the premises.

3 Kms from Thampanoor Bus Station and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station.
9 Kms from the Thiruvananthapuram Air Port.
Approachable by K.S.R.T.C bus route : Museum, Vellayambalam, Peroorkada, Sasthamangalam, Vattiyoorkavu and Nedumangadu route buses.

E-tickets Booking at www.indianrailways.gov.in


NEW DELHI, 6 JUNE 2011: Indian railways will launch its own e-ticket service on the website www.indianrailways.gov.in. The new service will not allow travel agents and will be available exclusively for passengers for booking the tickets. Currenlty Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) runs the online booking portal for Indian railways.

The decision to start a new e-ticket booking website comes after receiving numerous complaints form the common public that travel agents has been involved in bulk booking of the tickets, especially the Tatkal tickets.

According to the new railway e-ticketing service a maximum of eight transaction per ID will be allowed and a service charge of Rs. 5 for sleeper class ticket and Rs. 10 for other classes will be collected. This is less than the service charge collected by IRCTC.

LIC Life Plus Office Trivandrum


TRIVANDRUM , 6 JUNE 2011: LIC Life Plus Office has been inaugurated in Trivandrum. The office was inaugurated by AP Anil Kumar, state minister.

The LIC Life Plus office will offer value added serivces for the clients of Life Insurance Corporation. The office will accept LIC premiums from all over the world, timings 9 am to 6 pm.

Kerala's first private business jet aircraft from Joy Alukkas group

TRIVANDRUM , 6 JUNE 2011: Joy Alukkas Group has unveiled Kerala's first private business jet aircraft service at Cochin today.

The Embraer Phenom 100 aircraft from Brazil with space for 5 passengers will function as private jet to the Alukkas group. It took 10 days and stops in 19 different countries to ferry the aircraft from Brazil to Chennai.



The Embraer Phenom jet is a six seater aircraft which can fly upto 41,000 feet high. It can fly upto 3.5 hours non stop without refueling. The aircraft costs 21 crore and an additional 3 lakh rupees will be needed for the monthly maintenance of the aircraft.

Joy Alukkas plans to start a chartered flight company with four aircrafts, including a helicopter.

K. Karunakaran Statue at Trivandrum

TRIVANDRUM, 6 JUNE 2011: The Government of Kerala will install a statue of former Kerala Chief Minister (Late) K Karunakaran at Trivandrum.

This was announced by CM Oommen Chandy at the 94th birth anniversary celebrations of the Leader. The exact location of the statue will be announced later.

Karunakaran was born on 5 July 1918 at Chirackkal in Kannur District and died on 23 December 2010 at Ananthapuri Hospital Trivandrum. He was a former Chief Minister of Kerala, Home minister of Government of Kerala, and Cabinet Minister for Industries of Government of India.

Snehichutheerathavar wins biggest drama award in India

TRIVANDRUM, 6 July 2011: ‘Snehichutheerathavar’, the drama by Trivandrum Mamatha has won the award for the Best drama in the recently concluded Adoor Bhasi Professional Drama Competition-2011 at Trivandrum.

The crew of the Drama recieved a cash prize of Rs. One lakh rupees which is the highest award given for Drama's in India.

Satheesn Sangamitra won the best director award for the play Athijeevanakattu. Kottayam Sasi won the best actor award and Usha Chandrababu won the best actress award.

Seven plays were featured in the festival held at VJT Hall Trivandrum. These included ‘Mayakazhcha’ , ‘Indraneelam’ , ‘Ramanan Oru Pranayagaatha’ , ‘Athijeevanakaatu’, ‘Snehichutheerathavar’, ‘Panicker and Panicker’ and ‘Kannaki’ .

Travancore Royals may have been the Richest Royals in the World

Trivandrum, 6 July 2011: Now Sree Padmanabha swami temple has become the richest temple in the world, another analysis on the huge wealth discovered from the temple has come out. According to a media report, if the present king Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma owned the temple treasue he would be the second richest royal in the world.

According to the Forbes magazine which publishes the list of wealthiest persons in the world, King Bhumibol of Thailand is the richest living royal in the world with a wealth of $30 billion. Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, comes second with $20 billion. The current unearthed wealth from the Sree Padmanabha Temple accounts to about $22 billion and still counting. As per reports the Travancore Raja may become the world's richest royal after the final report is out. But the Royal family is not at all interested in the wealth. According to history, in 1750, humble kings of Travancore has surrendered their wealth to Lord Vishnu (Sree Padmanabha) the diety of the temple and later ruled the state as the servant of the Lord.

Commando Protection to Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple

Trivandrum, 6 July 2011: After the news came out about the One Lakh Crore rupees worth gold in Sree Padmanabha Swami temple, the police has goofed up security in and around the temple. Police Commandos has taken charge of the security of the temple from yesterday.

The government plans to setup a 175 member commando wing for the security of the temple soon. Advance security systems like CCTV cameras, sensors, etc will be installed inside the temple. A police control room has already been functioning near the temple.




If decision comes to keep the treasure inside the temple itself, the government plans to setup high security storage systems too.

Meanwhile the Travancore royal family has appealed in the Supreme Court to keep the Sree Padmanabha Temple treasure details secret. The second elder member of the family Sree Moolam Tirunal Ramavarma has filed a petition in the Supreme court to control the media from publishing reports about the Temple's wealth.

Engineering Rank List 2011 CEE Kerala

Trivandrum, 4 July 2011: The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations CEE Kerala will publish the Engineering rank list for admission to professional colleges in the academic year 2011-12 soon.

Currently the procedure of normalisation of marks is being going on. This process which was in a deadlock due to the non-availability of qualifying examination marks from various boards inside and outside the country has been solved.
The admission to medicine courses was made earlier based on the KEAM entrance marks. However from this onward engineering admission will be based on entrance marks plus the qualifying examination marks.

Finance Minister KM Mani will present the revised budget for the financial year 2011-12.

Earlier the outgoing Finance Minister of Kerala Thomas Issac presented a budget during February 2011.

Vivek Express at Trivandrum Central


Trivandrum, 3 July 2011: Vivek Express, a special train featuring the life and works of Swami Vivekananda will reach Trivandrum Central railway station on July 3. The train will be open to visitors from 10 am to 5pm till July 5.

The train which was flagged off by Railway minister Mamata Banerjee from Howrah is been travelling across the country with halts on important railway stations. The train will feature photographs of Vivekananda, teachings, books, etc.

This year marks the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the great social reformer of India.

HDC & BM, JDC Courses State Co-operative Union Admission now

Trivandrum, 3 June 2011: Applications has been invited for the admission to the Junior Diploma in Co-operation (JDC) and Higher Diploma in Co-operation and Business Managment courses (HDC & BM) conducted by State Co-operative Union.

The courses will be provided at Co-operative colleges all over Kerala. For the residents of Trivandrum the application form and other details can be had from the Trivandrum Co-operation Training College situated at Kuravankonam, Trivandrum (Phone: 04712436689).

H.D.C. Course:
This is a Post Graduate Diploma Course of 11 months duration including two months practical training. The minimum qualification for education to the HDC course is a University Degree. The course is conducted at 8 Cooperative Training Colleges of which one is under the management of NSS at Kottayam. The admission of candidates is purely on merits of marks.


J.D.C. Course:
The course is of 10 months duration of which two months are devoted for practical training. There are 9 junior level training centers in the state out of which 5 are for the student under general sector and four are for SC/ST students. In addition to the SC/ST batches, one general both for the students selected in open merit is being conducted in the SC/ST centers except at Wayanad. 50% seats under general sector are
reserved for Institutional and departmental candidates ( i.e. 35+15) and the remaining 50% to the candidates selected from private sector.

Filmfare Awards 2011: Malayalam Movie Awards Winners

Trivandrum, 3 July 2011: The 58th Idea Filmfare Awards 2010 (South) was presented in Hyderabad on July 2, 2011. Awards were given to exceptional films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages.

Mammootty was selected as the best actor in Malayalam for his role in the movie Pranchiyettan and the Saint, whereas Mamta Mohandas won the best actress award for the movie Kadha Thudarunnu. Pranchiyettan won three awards including Best film, Best Direction and Best Actor. Kadha Thudarunnu and Anwar won two awards each.



Best Film awards in other language category went to Mynaa (Tamil), Veda (Telugu), Jackie (Kannada). Vikram won the Best Actor award for Ravanan and Best Actress award went to Anjali for Angadi Theru in the Tamil movie section. AR Rahman and Shreya Ghoshal won two awards each in their respective categories for Tamil and Malayalam songs. Sabu Cyril won the filmfare award for the Best Production Design in the film Endhiran.
