Penpattanam Malayalam film review

The movie ‘Penn Pattanam’ directed by VM Vinu comes under the typical Malayalam movie genre. If someone re-phrases it, it can be described as a ‘family entertainer’. It contains everything an average family looks for. But the movie is par below average. The story is written by Renjith and screenplay by TA Razak. The film has no quality of those behind-screen experience hands. But the actors gave a remarkable performance, specially, Nedumudi Venu, Revathi, KPAC Lalitha, Swetha Menon, Augustin and Lal, to conceal other flaws of the movie.

Storyline

Girija,[Revathi] Santha,[KPAC Lalitha] Suhara [Swetha Menon] and Vishnupriya are four different women hails from the middle-class. They together operate a small sewage cleaning unit in Kozhikode town. They share the all their problems together. One day they get 30 lakhs, from a waste bin, in an abandoned bag. They decide to share it first but they at last deposits the money in the Unnithan’s [Nedumudi Venu] finance company. New issues arise after that. Antony [Lal] is the Sub Inspector, investigates a Hawala-murder and he finds out a huge amount of money is missing. The investigation then circles around the four women. Suhara is looking for financial help for her paralysed husband’s [Sadiq] operation. Girija asks Unnithan to give her money back, but he denies paying. Finally they together find a solution and they solve and finish the problems.

Performance

VM Vinu’s casting is very good. Actually, the casting helps him to come out with relatively OK movie which is having a script full of flaw. Among the stars Nedumudi Venu scores maximum points in a role of a Villainous yet comical natured character. Among the four women, Revathi and Swetha Menon did very well while KPAC Lalitha did justice to her role. The Neelathamara fame Kailas did relatively small character [Mani – the love interest of Vishnupriya] that has no importance in the script or story. Augustin did fine performance in the role of the murdered man’s father. Even if his role is limited with 3 – 4 scenes, he created an impact.

Negatives

The story is so simple; the only freshness it brings is that it has 4 women in the title roles. The scripting and direction both stand par below average. The story is perfect for enticing good comedy sequences, both the director and script writer failed to create comedy from a potential story. The only relief is Nedumudi Venu. The songs are highly avoidable. I don’t understand why the directors are inviting MG Sreekumar for making pale and shallow songs.

Positives

The movie has a totally new environment of Kozhikode. The director gave much care for giving the dialogues in the slang of Malabar for most of the characters. That creates freshness to the movie. Once again the performance of the lead cast is the biggest positive.

Trivandrum International Film Festival TIFF 2010

The 15th Trivandrum International Film Festival will be conducted from July 30to August 6, 2010 at Trivandrum. The venue for the film festival will be the Kalabhavan theatres and the Kesari Memorial Hall.

Noted Bengali film Director Budhdeb Dasgupta will inaugurate the festival on 30 July 6.30 pm at Kalabhavan Theatre.

Academy award winning movie‘The Hurt Locker’, directed by Kathryn Bigelow will be the inaugural film and ‘Antaheen’ by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury will be the final film.

The festival will showcase 50 films from 20 countries in categories such as world cinema, Asian cinema, French comedies, Argentine retrospective etc.

Asian School of Business (ASB) in Trivandrum has partnered University of California Santa Cruz, US for a series of exchange programmes.

Trivandrum Technopark celebrates 20th Birthday

The Technopark Trivandrum, India’s first IT park, is celebrating 20 years of its establishment today.

The idea of a computer park for technology based companies was conceived by the Kerala government in July 1990. The foundation stone for the park was laid in March 1991 and was inaugurated in November 1995. Noted industrialist K P P Nambiar was the first chairman of Technopark Trivandrum.

Elappully Panchayat Green Kerala Express winners

Elappully in Palakkad, has won the best panchayath award in the social reality show, Green Kerala Express, telecasted in Doordarshan.

The panchayat won Rs 1 crore as prize money.

The integrated dairy farming project conducted by the panchayat was selected in the reality show.

Akathethara panchayat in Palakkad, came second and Adat panchayat from Thrissur came third.

World's largest Orchid blooms in Botanical Garden Palode

A very rare orchid called Tiger Orchid has been bloomed in Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute, Palode, Trivandrum. The Tiger orchid also called Giant Orchid, Sugar Cane Orchid or Queen of the Orchids, is the world's largest orchid.

The orchid which is scientifically called Grammatophyllum speciosum, is native to New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines, growing in crotches of large trees on exposed areas of the lowland tropical rainforest.

According to the scientists of the Botanical garden, this orchid blooms very rare in Indian circumstances and the flower has a life span of more than 30 days.

V. Surendran Pillai Trivandrum west MLA to become Kerala Minister

V. Surendran Pillai, the only legislator of Kerala Congress (P.C. Thomas) faction will be inducted to V.S. Achuthanandan led Cabinet. Decision about this has been taken in the LDF meeting held yesterday unanimously. The formal announcement and the portfolio decision will be made probably on Friday.

V. Surendran Pillai represent the Trivandrum west constituency and the fouth minister from Kerala Congress (J) in this cabinet. All the four MLAs from the Kerala Congress (J) faction had become ministers in the LDF cabinet.

He becomes the third minister elected as an MLA Trivandrum west constituency, his predecessors included K Pankajakshan and MV Raghavan.
