Trivandrum, 28 February 2012: The annual Pongala festival of the renowned Attukal Bhagavathy temple at Attukal, Trivandrum began today with the 'Kappukettu' ritual. The festival will continue for the next ten days and will conclude with the Pongala on March 7, 2012. Around 35 lakh women are expected to take part in the Pongala festival.

Kerala University Youth Festival 2012
Trivandrum, 28 February 2012: Kerala University Youth Festival, the largest youth festival of Asia will be held at Kollam from February 29th to March 4th, 2012.
Around 5000 talented youth from more than 250 colleges affilitated to the University of Kerala will participate in the week long festival . Competitions will be held in 63 cultural events at eight venues which include Sree Narayana College, Sree Narayana Womens College, Fatima Mata National College, Vellapally NatesanShastipoorthi Smaraka College of Nursing, Karmala Rani Training College and TKM Engineering College.

The Youth Festival will be inaugurated on February 29th with a colourful procession and flag hoisting followed by a formal inaugural function by Speaker G. Karthikeyan which will be held at Sree Narayana College (Kakkanadan Nagar).

Kerala PWD to launch e-payment, e-tender & e-notification

Five New Roads in Trivandrum City
New Delhi, 22 February 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the work related to the second phase of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) at Trivandrum. The city will get five new roads at a stretch of 9.5 kms which includes 2-km Kowdiar-Peroorkada stretch; 2.75-km RR Lamp-Statue-Overbridge-Pazhavangadi stretch; 1.46-km Attakulangara-Sreevarahom-Enchakkal stretch; 2.7-km Museum Junction-Bakery-Panavila-Model School junction stretch; and the 600-m new alignment at Shanghumughom, reports The Hindu.

14 km road in the city has been earlier developed under Phase I of CRIP. The Trivandrum Road Development Company which builds the road will now enter the third phase of the project soon.

Lotus Parnasala at Santhigiri Ashram gets LED lighting
Trivandrum, 22 February 2012: The newly installed LED lighting system of the Lotus Parnasala at Santhigiri Ashram on February 22nd will be inaugurated by Kerala CM Oommen Chandy today. Today which marks the day of Poojithapeedam Samarpana Celebration and the biannual Kumbhamela will begin with a Pushpanjali at 5am and the flag hoisting at 6 am. It will be followed by Floral Offering at Parnasala, Guru Darshanam and other offerings before the Guru.
The Poojitha Peedam samarpanam Meeting will be inaugurated be Kerala Finance Minister K.M. Mani and Social Welfare Minister Dr. M.K. Muneer will preside.

Kerala Best Tourist Destination in India 2012: Outlook Traveller Survey
Trivandrum 18 February 2012: Kerala has been rated as the Best Tourist Destination in India in a surveuy conducted by the leading travel magazine Outlook Traveller.
Kerala was also rated as the second best winter destination, fourth best state for beach destinations etc. This is the second time Kerala has been ranked as the No. 1 state in Tourist Destinations. Kerala's business hub Kochi has been rated as the sixth best city for tourists following Jaipur, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
The survey was conducted by the Nielsen Company on behalf of the Outlook Traveller magazine.

In an interview to Manorama Online, the NORKA CEO has said that an amount of Rs. 50 lakh rupees will be alloted for this programme. Around 1000 students who are the children of Non resident Keralites can avail the scholarship. The amount will be provided from the Norka Directors Fund and the recipients will be selected based on the income of the families.
In addition to this NORKA also plans to introduce an insurance scheme for Keralites working in other states outside Kerala. The scheme is planned in association with United India Assurance company.

Thakaraparambu Flyover: Work begins today
Trivandrum, 14 February 2012: The much awaited Thakaraparambu flyover will be soon a reality. The construction work of the flyover will start from today and is expected to be finished in two years of time. The work is undertaken by Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) is part of the First Intermediate Ring Road, which passes through Vellayambalam Junction, Thycaud, Power House Road, Thakaraparambu, Vazhapalli, Pettah, Kannammoola, Law College, PMG, LMS and Museum Junction.
It will be the second flyover in the city, the Bakery Junction flyover being the first in this project.

ID Proof is Must for Upper Class Railway Passengers from February 15: List of Valid ID Proofs

Trivandrum, February 14, 2012: People traveling in first class AC, AC two tier, AC three tier, AC chair car and executive classes on trains will have to carry any one of the prescribed original proofs of identity during their journey from February 15.
Railways said the new rule was applicable to any of the passenger or the passengers booking tickets from computerised passenger reservation system or through the internet and traveling in upper class.
The passengers who fail to produce ID proof will be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly.

Section 144 imposed at Vilappilsala, Harthal tomorrow
IPC Section 144 has been declared at Vilappilsala and surrounding areas following unrest from the part of protestors against the garbage plant.
The police had earlier arrested the protestors which included women and children. Tension prevails in the area after todays police action.
Meanwhile the Congress party has called for a hartal in the panchayat to protest against the police action against the residents.

Trivandrum, 13 February 2012: The Vilappilsala agitation turned violent today resulting in the arrest of thousand of protestors including women and children.
The City Corporation restarted its operations for the removal of garbage from various areas of the city to the Vilappilsala plant from today onwards. The Janakeeya Samara Samithi along with the local residents of the Vilappilsala protested against this by blocking the road to the plant which resulted in police action.

Pod Car - Sky Car in Trivandrum: Government to Introduce Personal Rapid Transit System Project in Trivandrum and Kottayam

Trivandrum, February 9, 2012: For enhancing the transporting networks in the cities, the Government resolves to introduce Pod Car in Trivandrum and Kottayam cities.
Pod car famously known as Sky car is part of the personal rapid transit system which is a very effective system to connect small towns with the larger part of the city.
The system runs on the elevated pillars and it works in battery and it has driver-less cabins . Each cabin could carry 6 people.
The project is expected to introduce first in Trivandrum city, from Eastfort toVellayambalam, 7km stretch.
The speed of the Pod Car will be 40km/hour. The primary stage is planning to create 210 pod car cabins which can operate 1200 people at a time.
Government is planning to create a Kochi Airport model company with private public partnership to develop the project.
The project will be handled by INKEL.

Speed Governor is Mandatory for School Vehicles in Kerala

Trivandrum, February 8, 2012: The government issued an order to make the speed governors mandatory for all school vehicles running in Kerala.
The decision came after the State witnessed increased rate of accidents upon school vehicles.
But the three wheeler vehicles are omitted from the order.

Trivandrum, 8 February 2012: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department has opened its official Facebook account and page for accepting complaints and suggestions from the public.
The Kerala MVD will now accept complaints in the form of posts, photos and videos uploaded by users. The posts thus uploaded will be handed over to the corresponding motor vehicle offices and necessary action will be taken by the department.
The department plans to accept photographs and complains regarding the issues of accidents, traffic rule violations, over speed of vehicles, bike stunts, etc.
The system of accepting complaints via social networks has been a success in metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai. In Kerala, the received posts will be processed at the nodal office at Ernakulam.

SSLC Exam 2012 Kerala Dates/Time Table Model Questions Announced
Trivandrum, 7 February 2012: The SSLC examination for the year 2012 will be held from March 12, Monday to March 24, 2012 Wednesday. Examinations will be held on all days except Sundays and Fridays. Around 4,70,100 students are expected to appear in the examination. The centre wise distribution of the students is as follows
Kerala - no. of students 468543 (Centres - 2739)
Gulf - no. of students 497 (Centres - 10)
Lakshadweep - no. of students 1060 (Centres - 9)

An increase of 11,213 students has been recorded this year compared to the previous year. The maximum number of students registered for the SSLC examination from a single school is from St. Mary's high school, Pattom Trivandrum. 1478 students are registered from this school.
The model question papers for the final examinations have been published by the SCERT. The model questions will be available at SCERT, Trivandrum, Model Boys HSS, Attingal, and selected schools in other districts.
Senior Citizens to get 10% seat reservation in state buses
Trivandrum, 7 February 2012: The government has increased the senior citizen seat reservation in state owned ordinary and limited stop buses to 10% of maximum seats. Currently the reservation is 5% and is available in all state and private buses.

Multi-level car parking facility at Statue, Trivandrum
Trivandrum, 7 February 2012: Government of Kerala will soon setup a multi-level car parking facility at Statue near the Secretariat annexe. TOI has reported that the land between the Secretariat annexe and new annexe will be used to setup the parking structure.
The Statue - Press club road is a busy stretch and traffic jams are usual due to improper parking. The new multi-level parking facility with a total area of 1, 61, 360 square feet, is expected to solve this issue. The estimated construction cost for the project is Rs 40 crore.

The foundation stone for the 51000 square feet building has been laid by the union minister of state health and family welfare Sudip Bandyopadhyay on February 6, 2012.
HLL Lifecare has taken 3 acres of land from Trivandrum Spinning Mills for 99 years lease agreement arrangement.
The state of the art 4 storeyed building would offer facilities for condom packing and storage. The estimated total cost of the project is Rs.17 crores.
The project is expected to generate employment for 300 people.

February 4, 2012: The Sahara Parivar withdraws its sponsorship deal with BCCI Team India and IPL team Pune Warriors sponsorship today.

Kerala, Goa offer lowest infant mortality rates in India
New Delhi, 2 February 2011: Goa and Kerala, the two Indian states has been rated as the best place to be born in India. The report published in the TOI, qouting the data from Union health ministry, the two states has the lowest infant mortality rates in India. Goa has an infant mortality death rate of 10 in 1000 whereas in Kerala it is 13/1000. Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest Infant Mortality Rate at 62, followed by UP (61) and Odisha (61).
The national average of infant mortality rate in India is 47. However states like Assam (58), Bihar (48), Chhattisgarh (51), Haryana (48), Madhya Pradesh (62), Odisha (61), Rajasthan (55) and Meghalaya (55) still have IMRs more than the national average.
